AND NOW, THE BOOK!

"The People of Townshend, Vermont," a traveling photo exhibition since 2003, is now a 112-page book with 48 black-and-white documentary portraits and accompanying stories about these small-town Vermonters–some of whom you can see on this site. Included are two articles by Karl about the project and his life as a photographer. This is a limited first edition of 500 copies.

The Foreword is written by Vermont writer Nancy Levine, Karl's long-time colleague and co-writer during their six years with Vermont Magazine. Of the photographs, the writer Lynn Stegner says, "Karl has captured on film the fleeting image of the soul, or the still luminous fragments of memory." Vermont photographer John Miller says the accompanying stories are "sometimes elegiac and often humorous."
